The University of Western Australia

Role: The University of Western Australia is a high quality, medium-sized university with a broad and balanced coverage of disciplines in the arts, sciences and the major professions. It is characterised by a strong research and postgraduate emphasis, linked to a high quality undergraduate education across the range of its disciplines; by selected areas of research concentration; and by an international focus for its activities and standards.

The University of Western Australia, the state's first university, opened in March 1913 with 184 students in three faculties : Arts, Engineering and Science. Today the university enrols over 14,000 students, in 8 faculties : Agriculture, Arts, Economics and Commerce, Education, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, Law, Medicine and Dentistry, and Science.

The quality of the University's teaching and research in higher education has been recognised by the Committee for Quality Assurance which has given the University top ratings in the three quality assurance rounds conducted.

The University consistently attracts high calibre students with approximately 70% of the State's top 1000 school-leavers who seek admission to Western Australian universities, enrolling at UWA.

The University's success in research is indicated by its ability to win competitive research grants, to publish in international outlets, to attract and retain staff of high quality, and to attract graduate research students.

The 65 hectare Crawley campus is widely acclaimed for the beauty of its setting beside the Swan River and for its grounds and buildings, which are listed in the Register of the Australian National Estate. There are over 200 species of plants and trees whose exotic variety and rich profusion enhance the tranquillity and beauty of the grounds, and support over 55 species of birds.

  • UWA’s pass rates are among the highest nationally. UWA has the second lowest crude drop out rate of all institutions reported by DEETYA.
  • Higher degree research enrolments have grown by 29% since 1993, and currently represent 11.5% of total enrolments in 1997, as compared with 10.0% in 1993. DEETYA reported that 10.6% of UWA's enrolments in 1996 were in higher degree research as compared with a national average of 5.3%.
  • UWA recorded the fourth highest number (3.2) of higher degree by research completions per FTE in 1995; significantly higher than the national average of 1.9.
