Mission and Vision Statement

Mission:

To advance, transmit and sustain knowledge and understanding, through the conduct of teaching, research, and scholarship at the highest international standards, for the benefit of the international and national communities and the state of Western Australia.

Vision:

In the 21st Century The University of Western Australia will be recognised as an internationally excellent, research-intensive university and a leading intellectual and creative resource to the communities it serves.

It will provide a broad and balanced coverage of disciplines in the arts, sciences, and the professions at internationally-recognised standards. It will be characterised by a strong research and postgraduate emphasis across the full range of its disciplines and it will be noted for concentrations of particular research excellence in selected areas of strength, opportunity and importance.

The University's research and postgraduate strength will be linked to and sustained by a high quality undergraduate programme in which teaching and learning takes place in an atmosphere of research and scholarship. The University will foster an international focus for all its activities and standards as an integral part of its overriding commitment to excellence and high quality. It will be valued above all, for its enduring commitment to improving society through learning and discovery.

The University of Western Australia

The University of Western Australia, the state's first university, opened in March 1913 with 184 students in three faculties : Arts, Engineering and Science. Today the university enrols over 14,000 students, in 8 faculties : Agriculture, Arts, Economics and Commerce, Education, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, Law, Medicine and Dentistry, and Science.

The quality of the University's teaching and research in higher education has been recognised by the Committee for Quality Assurance which has given the University top ratings in the three quality assurance rounds conducted.

The University consistently attracts high calibre students with approximately 70% of the State's top 1000 school-leavers who seek admission to Western Australian universities, enrolling at UWA.

The University's success in research is indicated by its ability to win competitive research grants, to publish in international outlets, to attract and retain staff of high quality, and to attract graduate research students.

The 65 hectare Crawley campus is widely acclaimed for the beauty of its setting beside the Swan River and for its grounds and buildings, which are listed in the Register of the Australian National Estate. There are over 200 species of plants and trees whose exotic variety and rich profusion enhance the tranquillity and beauty of the grounds, and support over 55 species of birds.

  • UWA has the second highest proportion of higher degree research enrolments nationally in 1997; 11.4% of UWA’s enrolments were in higher degree research as compared with a national average of 5.3%. The University’s higher degree research enrolments have grown by 29% since 1993, and currently represent 11.5% of total enrolments in 1998, as compared with 10.0% in 1993.
  • UWA recorded the third highest number (3.3) of higher degree by research completions per 10 academic staff FTE in 1996; significantly higher than the national average of 2.0
  • UWA obtained 6.9% of total research funds and 7.2% of the National Competitive Grant funds allocated to Australian higher education institutions in 1996. These allocations were the nation’s highest on a per capita basis.
