Mission and Vision Statement

Mission:

To advance, transmit and sustain knowledge and understanding, through the conduct of teaching, research, and scholarship at the highest international standards, for the benefit of the international and national communities and the State of Western Australia.

Vision:

In the 21st Century, The University of Western Australia will be recognised internationally as an excellent research-intensive university and a leading intellectual and creative resource to the communities it serves.

It will provide a broad and balanced coverage of disciplines in the arts, sciences, and the professions at internationally recognised standards. It will be characterised by a strong research and postgraduate emphasis across the full range of its disciplines and it will be noted for concentrations of particular research excellence in selected areas of strength, opportunity and importance.

The University's research and postgraduate strength will be linked to and sustained by a high quality undergraduate programme in which teaching and learning takes place in an atmosphere of research and scholarship. The University will foster an international focus for all its activities and standards as an integral part of its overriding commitment to excellence and high quality. It will be valued above all, for its enduring commitment to improving society through learning and discovery.

Significant Facts

  • The University of Western Australia, the State’s first university, was established in 1911 and opened with 184 students in three faculties: Arts, Engineering and Science. Today the University enrols over 15,000 students, in 9 faculties: Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts; Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Economics and Commerce; Education; Engineering, Computing and Mathematics; Law; Life and Physical Sciences; Medicine and Dentistry; Natural and Agricultural Sciences.
  • UWA consistently attracts high calibre students. In 2002, UWA enrolled 84% of the State’s top 5% of school-leavers and 73% of the top 10% of school leavers who enrolled at Western Australian universities.
  • UWA has proportionally the highest intake of school-leavers nationally. School-leavers represented 73.5% of its local commencing undergraduate students in 2001, while the national average was 46.8%.
  • In 2001, 11.9% of UWA’s enrolments were in higher degree by research compared with a national average of 5.3%. The University’s higher degree by research enrolments have increased over the past ten years by more than 43% The latest national figures show that in 2001, UWA had the second highest proportion of higher degree research enrolments nationally.
  • UWA recorded 3.6 higher degree by research completions per 10 academic staff FTE in 2000; significantly higher than the national average of 2.5.
  • The quality of the University’s teaching and research in higher education has been recognised by the Committee for Quality Assurance that gave UWA top ratings in each of the three quality assurance rounds.
  • UWA obtained 7.3% of the National Competitive Grant funds and 6.7% of the total research funds allocated to Australian higher education institutions in 2000. On a per capita basis, these allocations were the nation's first and third highest allocations.
  • The 65-hectare Crawley campus is widely acclaimed for the beauty of its setting beside the Swan River and for its grounds and buildings, which are listed in the Register of the Australian National Estate. There are over 200 species of plants and trees whose exotic variety and rich profusion enhance the tranquillity and beauty of the grounds, and support over 55 species of birds.
