Significant Facts
- The University of Western Australia,
the States first university, was established in
1911 and opened with 184 students in three faculties:
Arts, Engineering and Science. Today the University
enrols almost 17,000 students, in 9 faculties:
Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts; Arts, Humanities
and Social Sciences; Economics and Commerce; Education;
Engineering, Computing and Mathematics; Law; Life and
Physical Sciences; Medicine and Dentistry; and Natural
and Agricultural Sciences.
- Professor Barry Marshall, who runs a
molecular biology laboratory at UWA, and Dr Robin Warren
were awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or
Medicine for their discovery of the bacterium
Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic
ulcer disease.
- UWA consistently attracts high calibre
students. In 2005 UWA enrolled 83.0% of the States
top 5% of school-leavers and 80.9% of the top 10% of
school leavers who enrolled at Western Australian
universities.
- UWA has proportionally the highest
intake of school-leavers nationally. School-leavers
represented 75.0% of its local commencing undergraduate
students in 2004, while the national average was 44.3%.
- In 2004, 11.3% of UWAs
enrolments were in higher degree by research compared
with a national average of 5.0%. The latest national
figures show that in 2004, UWA had the second highest
proportion of higher degree research enrolments
nationally.
- The Universitys postgraduate
student enrolments have increased by 51.0% over the past
ten years.
- UWA obtained 7.8% of the National
Competitive Grant funds and 6.0% of the total research
income funds allocated to Australian higher education
institutions in 2003. On a per capita basis, these were
the nation's second and fourth highest allocations.
- The 65-hectare Crawley campus is
widely acclaimed for the beauty of its setting beside the
Swan River and for its grounds and buildings, which are
listed in the Register of the Australian National Estate.
